Anthropology Exam Notes Chapter 1 (Anthropology) Social Sciences are a science because it studies the behaviour of people using the scientific method Social Sciences: sciences that explore human societies and relationships Anthropology: the study of human beings as a species and members of groups such as families Psychology: the study of human mental processes and behaviour Sociology: the scientific study of people in groups Culture: the shared values, beliefs, behaviours and material objects of a group of people Inquiry Model 1. Identify a problem or a question, which provides a reason for the inquiry and a plan of action 2. Develop a hypothesis: possible answer to a question 3. Gather the data, many different ways to do this (case studies, sample surveys, experiments, interview or observation) 4. Analyze the data, must be done otherwise it is useless. It must be organized, then interpreted and then analyzed 5. Draw a conclusion, determine if your hypothesis was proved, or if it should be revised or rejected Methods Case Study: the observation of an individual, a situation or a group over a period of time Experiments: observing two or more different groups and comparing their behaviour or output, one group is usually the control Sample Surveys: used to obtain information about the thoughts or behaviour of a large group of people, uses a limited number of individuals who represent a larger group, allowing researchers to draw conclusions of that larger group from the answers of the individuals Interviews: a dialogue between the researcher and a few subjects to gain detailed information about thought and behaviour Observation: allows researchers to observe people in their “natural habitat” Unstructured observation: studying people without a predetermined idea about what to look for Structured observation: knowing
