Professional Counseling

Professional counseling is a voluntary, confidential process whereby clients talk to a counselor in many different incarnations in many different locations to seek out help for problems they are experiencing. The counselors can be found in all school levels, on college campuses, in hospitals, in private practice and in the military. This list just illustrates a small section of where help is available. Specifically, counselors are in high schools and on college campuses.
In high schools, counselors, if they can fight their way out of the mountains of clerical work, typically help students in both group therapy and individual attention. They also help with classroom guidance as well as career planning. By having counselors available and accessible to students, the hope is that they will seek out help if they need it. It is much easier to help students and to notice changes if you see them often. If a student was not seeking out a counselor on their own, they might not get the help they need, whereas by seeing the students regularly one can hope the counselor would be able to ferret out any issues the student may be dealing with.
In colleges, counselors can deal with more normal developmental issues as well as possibly a higher median age, taking into consideration that many adults are going back to school later in life. Although you are dealing with more normal developmental issues, there are budget and time constraints that may only allow a counselor to see a client for a few sessions. During that time the counselor will need to make a decision as to if the patient will need further assistance out of the college by seeing another therapist at a different agency.
