Advertising is the most dominant tool used by the media today. It is used to represent an attractive image, or in other terms, to use the power of persuasion to get, you, the consumer to purchase a certain product. Advertising agencies often use what’s called Classical Conditioning by using the combination of an item as well as a feeling or emotion (classical conditioning, wikipedia). For example, Herbal Essence™, a popular hair care product line, uses sexual innuendos in their commercials as well as their print ads, to make you consider that by using this product, you just might feel as good as you would while engaging in sexual activities . They appear to be correlating a relationship with your hair to a relationship with a person, they even have a hair care line called “Long-term relationship”. The same can be said for advertisers of most automobile companies, they try to make you believe, that by purchasing this particular car, you will look and feel like a million bucks!
In a 1933 advertisement for Dodge, there is a big, shiny black car in what appears to be some sort of elaborate indoor lobby or carport. I say this because the floor under and around the car is tile and there is what looks to be some sort of Persian-like rug in front of the car. It just doesn’t seem to be an outdoor atmosphere. There are seven people in the picture, three men and four women. There are two women and a man standing at the front of the car and they appear to be admiring the automobile while conversing with each other. There is a couple standing at the back and they seem to be appreciating some detail of the car also. Finally, there is a woman sitting in the driver seat looking out at a man standing next to the door of the car, looking in at her, or perhaps checking out the interior. They are all dressed in formal wear with women wearing dresses, covered either by fur shawls or coats, and the men are wearing tuxedos and holding their trench coats and hats, confirming...
