I choose to attend VIVA Quad Cities, because the Hispanic culture is the one I encounter most often in my life, and I am glad I did. It was a delightful event. I enjoyed it so much I went the second night it was held also. It was truly a fiesta! The purpose of this paper is to describe the cultural event I attended. I will be describing the great examples of the Hispanic culture that I saw that night. This will include religion, language, clothing, music, dance, and traditions.
The first VIVA fiesta was held in 1993. I was able to look up the newspaper article from the “Dispatch” the next day. Its headline read, “Thousands attend a festival to celebrate Hispanic culture.” The mission of the fiesta is focused on the importance of education. One of the people I interviewed was Louis Puente, president of VIVA! Quad Cities. He told me that the Hispanic community became concerned that not a large number of Mexican American children were going on to college due to financial reasons. The sole purpose of this fiesta is to raise money or scholarships to distribute to local students in need. VIVA Quad Cities is a non profit organization which celebrates the Hispanic culture. The fiesta gives you a chance to immerse yourself in the food, music, and culture. I went both days to experience the different events and enjoyed it immensely.
