Throughout this essay, this student will demonstrate their understanding of the guiding principles of Motivational Interviewing by critiquing examples of their performance in the digital recording. The scenario given to this student was a twenty four year old patient that was admitted into hospital with exacerbation of asthma. The patient smokes fifteen cigarettes a day and would like to give them up but is finding it hard to do so as he lives with friends that smoke. After examining the digital recording, this student has chosen three guiding principles to critically discuss in relation to the scenario. The chosen principles are: Understanding your patients Motivations, Listening to your patient, and Empowering your patient. Finally, this essay will highlight and discuss the contribution of Motivational Interviewing to nursing practice.

‘Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realise aspirations, to satisfy needs and to change or cope with the environment’ (http://www.who.int/healthpromotion/Milestones_Health_Promotion_05022010, 2009). Health Promotion works through several actions involving setting priorities, making decisions, planning strategies and enforcing them to achieve better health. Motivational Interviewing is a skilful clinical style for eliciting from patients their own good motivations for making behaviour changes in the interest of their health (Rollnick et al, 2007), and is technique used to promote health. Motivational Interviewing has developed from Prochaska and DiClemente’s transtheoretical model of change.
