When I first walked into the church I noticed that it was nowhere near as extravagant as the Vatican, but then I guess no church ever could be. It wasn’t small and had a very tall ceiling, which along with the walls was covered in bright colorful paintings trimmed in gold. The front where the priest talked was also covered in gold and the lights were dimmed. There were candles that were lit and the bells rang as the priest entered. It was somewhat uncomfortably warm yet cozy inside the church and the floor was on a slant. It was dead silent as we walked through the church to sit on our little black chairs. I was interested and very excited to see how the Italians attended mass. I don’t attend church very often so I’m not sure what to compare the mass to but from what I know I came to the conclusion that it was pretty much only the language that differed. People respond to what the priest says, we stood and then sat, we walked up to get our blessings, and had time to pray. At first the fact that I don’t regularly attend church intimidated me because I felt stupid that I didn’t always know what to do, or what to say. The people around me seemed to be very religious and I didn’t want my teachers or others to think any less of me because of my inexperience. Farran helped me, as he always does, and told me that I shouldn’t be embarrassed and that if anything church is one place that you won’t be judged or looked down upon. This helped a lot and allowed me to focus on the mass rather than my worries, but then I started to feel nervous again when I had to go up and receive my blessing because I was one of the only ones who crossed their arms. I was very glad when Jimmy did it with me, it definitely made me feel more comfortable with the situation and showed me that people didn’t care if I didn’t really know what to do. Even though I felt a little over whelmed at times overall I did have a very good experience, after I overcame the fact that I don’t attend church often....
