Lea Sisson Architect, has been brining a different approach to architecture in the Telluride and Aspen region for just a few years now. It has been labeled mountain contemporary, warm modernism, sustainable but what is really the underlying style is something most people have forgotten about…Organic Architecture. Coined by Frankl Wright and upheld by his successors, organic architecture is the foundation that separates her work from others.

It starts from a full understanding of the site and all of its natural elements. This approach differs vastly from the typical “stick a Disney western on the landscape” or the
“desperate to be different” cold urban modern that really wants to be in a Denver suburb..
It is an architecture that embraces the essence of why people live here…the overwhelmingly beautiful nature around us. “My goal is to bring that nature into your living spaces by diffusing the barriers of the inside and outside,” says Sisson. The other main difference to organic architecture is the study of the each individual building site’s natural elements… the sun and wind patterns, and the natural elements including vistas and all the existing vegetation and landforms. By letting these elements derive the building form you get a more efficient building that needs less of the manmade elements to keep cool and warm. The ecological building trend is only part of the whole in an organic building. An ecological building picks from a menu to make its dysfunctional form feel better about itself. This architecture starts with efficient spaces and in turn needs less menu items to function as a sustainable home. It is this subtle sophistication that has been hard to pinpoint, is the core to her work. Her background has been vastly different than most.
