Could education be an antidote to violence/terrorism?
I do not think that all kinds of education can be an antidote to violence or terrorism. However, we should receive the right education that helps us to respect others and think critically, not maliciously in order not to repeat precedents of wrong education such as Nazism. In other words, we need to learn to love others.
The right education is not only what is taught to improve knowledge and develop skills, but to encourage students to help others and develop into a decent human being. School is an example that shows how the right education works. At school, we learn how to get along with other people by cooperating in group projects. Through the whole process of cooperating, we become responsible for one another, and eventually their friends, not their enemies. Nazism, now a symbol of racism, exemplifies how badly the wrong education can affect people. Nazists’ principle was to regard other races as inferior than German and they brutalized many other people such as Jews. Unlike those who were wrongly educated, or brainwashed, those who have learned to help other people would not normally get involved in violence or terrorism.
The right education helps us to develop into a critical thinker. Without knowledge, we can hardly tell the difference between good and wrong, and in this way, we are not able to discern information correctly from the external world. But, if educated, we can discuss with peers things relevant to us and have good judgment with the help of them. After we know how to think, and how to make decisions, better informed judgment, we will be able to tell what is wrong and what is right. If we have the ability to make sensible decisions, it would be very unreasonable to think violence or terrorism is a just way to solve problems. Therefore, as long as people know violence and terrorism are a poison to society, it is very unlikely that they commit such things.
