The American dream is a term used frequently to express the aspiration and desire of what one can achieve in the United States and hopes to accomplish. This can vary greatly from person to religious beliefs to cultural background. Although throughout the centuries their has been one universal dream that is considered the American dream. Wikipedia defines the American Dream as, hard work and determination can lead to a better life, usually through the earnings of money. These were values held by many early European settlers, and have been passed on to the newer generations. Some consider the American dream to be having two children and living in a suburban house with financial security and 2 car garages. Currently this iconic middle class lifestyle is lived by a sizable minority. The American Dream has been criticized for its emphasis on material possessions as a way of finding happiness.

This will be the day when we bring into full realization the American dream -- a dream yet unfulfilled. A dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed; a dream of a land where men will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few; a dream of a land where men will not argue that the color of a man's skin determines”. This was said by Martin Luther King, Jr. and in my opinion reflects a huge part of the American dream that everyone coming to America hopes to achieve. To become part of the American culture and to be accepted with no perdejucies. For some this is the reason why they choose to leave there country and come to America. My family was one of them. They saw America as a land of opportunity, of were they could feel safe and not fear anti- Semitism. To them the American dream was a place where they could be able to say or do anything freely....
