Rap And Rock Display The Same Messages In Their Lyrics

The many different types of music genres in our society have reflected the same themes through their music: drugs, violence, and sex. These themes have been with us throughout time, but the evolution of music has changed the way artists portray them. Two types of music that heavily express these themes are rap and rock. Rap music has a poor reputation due to the artists’ use of drugs, violence, and the way they portray female sexuality in a derogatory way. Rap music is associated with African Americans who dress in baggy clothing, wear big gold chains, wife beaters, and tend to speak in slang. Rock music, on the other hand, has a more positive reputation. Rock artists are closely associated with white, middle and upper class people who came from well educated, wealthy families. Rock artists, for the most part, have a classier style of dressing. Many Rock artists wear jeans that are fitted to them rather than exceedingly baggy and a t-shirt or polo shirt. Even though both genres of music have different reputations, they are both at fault for depicting violence, strong drug usage, and sex in similar ways.
The messages that both rap and rock artists send are the same; however the way they send them are different. Both genre’s of music reflect off the themes drugs, violence, and sex. Artists abuse drugs to help them escape from the “real world” and numb their anger, sorrow, and emotions. They express this through their music in the lyrics of their songs, and their music videos. They also express violence in this way. When a large amount of anger builds up inside them and they need to let it out, violence is their last resort. It is evident in rap and rock music when the artists are undergoing a hard time or through the writing about a past story. Although drugs and violence are common themes in these two genres of music, sex seems to be the most popular.
