As child bearers, women feel the responsibility to create offspring. The idea of having children has been in the heads of women since their childhood. Why do young girls carry around baby dolls? They carry them around because they want to be just like their mommy. Though the young girl will grow out of the baby doll phase (hopefully), the desire to be a mom someday usually still remains. Once girls are teenagers, they may become babysitters, work in a day care or Church nursery, or mentor young children through a school program. Such opportunities open the eyes of the girls and give them thoughts like, “Wow, I will never raise a kid like that” or “I hope someday I will be as good of a mother as she is”. A life with children is the dream girls have had since childhood that they hope to turn into a reality someday.
Because I am not a guy, I really do not know how guys think. I don’t even think guys my age know how they think themselves (joke...?). My assessment of the male thought process comes from 18 years of living with a father, 18 years of living with a brother, and about 10 years of being friends with boys, only because boys had cooties until I was about 8 years old. Men want to be just like their dads someday. They believe it is important to pass on the family name. They also know that most women want children, so they want children, too.
Although “Attitudes About Childlessness” did not focus on gender, I believe that men and women generally have the same attitude about childlessness. I think that both men a women believe that having children is important. Certain childhood experiences, leadership positions, pride, and pleasing the opposite sex create a desire for children. A family with one child or more is the only family a guy or girl has really experienced and, size-wise, is the family they hope to have.
