The Ramones are often referred to as the first punk rock band. They were successful in both the U.S. and the U.K. accomplishing more then just being musicians. The Ramones rocked the U.S. and U.K. from 1974-1996 playing their last show with the Lollapalooza music festival. Starting off in Forest Hills, Queens in NY the Ramones quickly gained the respect of thousands across the U.S. and U.K.
Throughout their active time period the Ramones accomplished more than most musician ever have or ever will accomplish. The Ramones were ranked in the Rolling Stone’s top 50 greatest artists and VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock The Ramones were also voted the second greatest rock and roll band only behind the Beatles. Also, in 1979 the movie Rock ‘n’ Roll High School was released, with the Ramones taking on a star role. On March 18th, 2002, the Ramones received the greatest honor that a rock and roll band could receive. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Throughout the 22 active years of the Ramones they played in over 2,000 concerts touring almost non stop for all of these years.
Each Ramone band member took a band name with the last name always being Ramone although none were related. Throughout the active time of the Ramones there were 8 different members, all never in the band at once. The original members were Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, and Dee Dee Ramone. One downfall of the Ramones was that within the band there was always constant conflict. The main conflicts usually came between Joey and Johnny. The two were constantly fighting over everything from girlfriends to politics. Once Johnny stole Joey’s girlfriend, and later married her. Despite being in the same band after this incident the two stopped talking. Aside from the conflicts brought to the band by Joey and Johnny, Dee Dee had is own problems. His constant addictions and rehab visits brought loads of stress to the band.
