THE SMALL MAN WHO LED A BIG NATION
A poet once wrote:
“Two men look out through the same bars,
One sees the mud and one the stars.”
This man saw the stars and much beyond them. Limits- he never imposed them on how high he could soar. An archetype of simplicity, characterization of intelligence and the embodiment of truth-he is none other than our own Bapuji, Mahatma Gandhi.
‘The frail and old man who sports a simple khadhi cloth and often a khadhi shawl draped around his shoulders’, this is the figure that strikes us immediately when we think of Gandhiji-a figure recognizable in the nook and corner of the world.
A heart of steel, a firm mind, the personification of truth-I bow down to this great soul. Unless your heart, your soul, and your whole being are behind every decision you make, the words from your mouth will be empty, and each action will be meaningless.
His actions, experiments, protests and words still remain imprinted in my heart.
Every time anyone hurts me, I remember him and his words-“No one can hurt me without my permission.” Every time I feel like copying from my neighbor during my examination, I get reminded of him and I restrain myself saying that, “what am I going to achieve by copying as the marks I would get would not belong to me then.” Thus just as Gandhiji claimed that his life was his message, every incident in his life has been an eye-opener to me.
“Hate the sin, love the sinner.”-this is a thought that has always made me ponder and helped me from straying from the path of sin and evil. This great soul though has left his mortal self has always remained immortal and perpetual in my heart. I was also enamored by this charismatic figure who led this big nation to independence just by mere words and fasts which indeed indicates how powerful they were.
