The overwhelming tragedy that besieged our nation on September eleventh has shocked Americans. Indeed, images of the carnage that traveled around the world proved how vulnerable the world is to barbaric terrorism. It is second nature to us to immediately ask "why" and begin the search for deep and probable causes of such puzzling events. As we try to come to know the tragedy of September eleventh, as students of a foreign language, a human rights approach can provide some guidance. The outrageous loss of life, and the planned attacks on the World Trade Centers justifies calling them a crime against humanity. Murder is, also, a crime against humanity. The victims are entitled not only to our warmest sympathy but also to justice in the courts.
First, a search for explanation does not imply justification. There is no justification for such acts. No explanation can forget the perpetrator's moral and legal responsibility for these criminal acts. We need to begin by stating that the crimes of September eleventh were consciously committed by criminals who could have acted differently, and who carry responsibility for their actions, morally and legally.
What would lead to attacks of this extremity? The only possible answer is human rights violations. Human rights violations, through research, reports under what conditions governments and the people will commit murder, torture, and arbitrary imprisonment. This research will help us to understand the procedure to prevent future violations. War, poverty, and the act of totally obeying a leader, much like a dictatorship, can lead to large-scale violations, according to recent research. Studies of genocide have proven to convince people to believe that it is acceptable to kill others.
In the past year, many thoughts or comments were made in the fact that the criminals acted through religion. All Muslims are completely disgusted at any acts of violence carried out in the name of their religion. In such,...
