Primary Care:
Primary care means the first contact with health services, like; G.P’s who diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems in the local community, practise nurses, dentists who are routine and specialise in care for teeth and gums and opticians who carry out eye and sight examinations.. For example; the nearest Primary Care organisation to me is the Local G.P, The Nightingale Vale Surgery. This care deals with routine injuries and illnesses as well as preventive care, such as services to help you stop drug abuse. Primary care usually deals with a person’s general health.

Secondary Care:
Secondary care focuses on hospital care, day surgeries; were patients are treated ad can go home on the same day and out patient treatments. There is also emergency care also known as A & E, this is required for patients attend hospital as a result of an accident or trauma and need emergency treatment. An example of a Secondary Care Organisation is the, Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It is called secondary care as a referral to these services is required following a recommendation from a primary care service provider.

Tertiary Care:
This is provided by consultants with special expertise, who have the equipment and facilities required for handling complex cases. Patients are referred to them by other consultants when they realise that more specialised care is needed than they can give. However referrals of this kind accounts for a small proportion of all hospital treatment.

Department of Health:
The department of health (DOH) in England as the responsibility for:
• Making policies in relation to health and social care and for issuing guidelines.
• Monitoring the performance of health authorities and social services department
• Allocating resources for the provision of health and social care.
