Could backlash against the war on terror actually lead more people to become terrorists?

The primary cause of why people become terrorists is more complicated and deep rooted than simply being summed up by the term backlash. I'm always remarkably frustrated when I read articles written about Bush's war on terror that don't analyse or indeed consider at all the psychological elements at work behind American attitudes and reactions by terrorists. This is vital when commentating on this issue. This aside, however, backlash against the war on terror is indeed a cause of the continued existence of terrorists. Let's analyse this further.
In order for us to gain an understanding on what causes this backlash itself, and about how this has a significant effect on the reasons terrorists will continue to exist, we need to have a look at the following. Firstly, we need to analyse the problems in the American psyche that renders them unable to end terrorism by any means. This leads on appropriately to how we've succumb to the position of being sucked into a vicious cycle of never ending violence in the war against terror.
First and foremost, let's deal with the psychological background to actions taken by the Americans in Iraq. After 9/11, Americans were inundated with messages of hope, strength, unity, and promises to bring those responsible to justice. Behind the bombardment of calls for action throughout the media was the underlying message that America should take drastic and decisive action against the perpetrators of the attacks.
In any rational person's mind, the thought of this should surely have painted pictures of a long, tiring conflict that would no doubt turn the tide of world opinion against America. It should have resurrected painful memories of Vietnam, another example of where America was sucked into an endless cycle of bloodshed. But, of course, the minds of Americans following 9/11 were anything but rational....
