When was the last time you opened up a newspaper and didn’t see a story that contained a teenager who had bashed someone up, been caught stealing or holding a gigantic party that got out of hand?
Teenagers are often portrayed as crazy party animals in the media, but what do literary sources say about them? After many long hours of research, top scientists have found that they are not all the extreme trouble-makers the media makes them look like.
While there may be some trouble children, such as Corey Worthington, the teen who had a large party that got out of hand and afterwards refused to take responsibility and apologise, most teens are, in fact, sensible and responsible. Authors have long been showing this side of teens, and movie directors and screenwriters are now also joining the cause. Two prime examples of this is the book ‘Touch Me’ by James Moloney and the movie ‘Looking for Alibrandi’.
‘Touch Me’ is about a boy in Yr12 named Xavier McLachlan who goes to a high class catholic school named St Matthew’s, a school known for rugby union. However, his life is turned upside down as he meets a girl from Lawson High School named Nuala Magee. She breaks all the rules and is completely different to every other girl that Xavier knows. Xavier starts dating Nuala, but his friends don’t approve. Xavier stands up to his friends and finds new ones. This book shows that some teens are not affected by peer pressure and have the guts to stand up for themselves and others.
‘Looking for Alibrandi’ is a movie about a poor Italian-Australian girl called Josie Alibrandi. Josie lives in a suburb of Sydney known as ‘Little Italy’ and goes to a rich catholic girls school on a scholarship, where she is school vice-captain. Her main rival is a girl named Carly. Carly is the school captain and is described as ‘Queen Bitch’ by many of the other students. Josie longs to be part of the class that Carly is in, the upper middle class....
