INTRODUCTION
It is important to commence this discourse with an exposition of what war portends for humans. We turn to Asa, a musician making waves in Nigeria for an informative insight into the human decline characteristic of wars.
I woke up in the morning
tell you what I see on my T.V screen
I see the blood of an innocent child
and everybody’s watching………
….hey mister soldier man
tomorrow is the day you go to war
but you are fighting for another man’s cause
you don’t even know him
what did he say to make you so blind
to your conscience and reason
could it be love for your country
or the gun you use in killing
Asa “Fire on the Mountain”
Asa in this hit song brings war to our bedrooms and makes us realize that in wars, human life loses its value and death becomes like a celebration of life; death becomes an everyday occurrence that the people see as a comedy which amuses them. Asa not only describes the loss of emotions connected to wars, but she paints a clear picture of the bestiality that underlies the motives of the principal actors of most wars, hence she asks “could it be love for your country/ or for the gun you use in killing”. It is not an uncommon thing to see soldiers fighting wars, whose cause they don’t know. It then becomes imperative to question what could be their driving force.
The history of man can be said to be that of wars and rumours of war. In fact, war has helped in shaping the literatures of most countries. Ruskin (1965) declared that war is the precondition for a great work of art. As jaundiced as this opinion might be, it is imperative to deduce from it the tendency of an inspiring creative piece to come out of wars; this is of course not to say that a great work of art can not be produced outside wars. So close is the affinity between literature and war that one...
