I always saw myself as a diffident person who, if given the choice, would not prefer to be the center of attention. When I was younger, I would enjoy being home alone either watching television or drawing. It was until about a year ago when I joined the school newspaper that I learned to be more aggressive.
When I entered the journalism class, my teacher had told us that successful journalists have hard hitting stories that are filled with intense quotes from their interviews and new information that nobody had even known before. Well that is pretty much common sense but I never realized what my job really consisted of until my first real article.
I picked an easy topic in which I did not need much interviewing or background information. I took the easy way out and interviewed my friends online or over the phone. Well the amount of effort I made correlated with my grade; I believe I received an 80 on that article. It wasn’t until the third article that I had realized that I needed to actually perpetuate an article that my teacher would finally enjoy. There was a new program that was assigned to the freshmen class and I was determined to find a good story. I made appointments with one of the deans and the head of the physics department. When I first meet people, I often smile a lot and not say much. My interview went fine with the dean since she was very understanding. It was my interview with the head of the physics department that had me petrified. He is a very confident man and I felt as though he demeaned me. Where does my leadership come in here you may ask? Well I know this doesn’t seem like such a big achievement but sometimes when you built something up for yourself so much that any little achievement seems as though it is a parade.
