“Tough Teaching”

In reviewing Kurt Wiesenfeld’s article in Newsweek titled “Making the Grade” I would whole heartedly agree with his teaching methods and numerous points of not backing down in order to make the student happy. The point he makes in the third paragraph when he states, “You might groan and moan, but you accepted it as the outcome of your efforts or lack thereof”, simply means there should never be a question or complaint about your grade, you deserve the grade you receive judging by the amount of time you put into the work assigned.
Another point in which Wiesenfeld shows the ideal methods of teaching is his lack of remorse for the student. He will not pass a student just because he or she is the leading scorer on the basketball team or the fastest athlete on the track team; Wiesenfeld believes in rules and stands by them. He states in the article that the students should take themselves seriously at the time being because the country they live in will have to take them serious eventually. In this sentence I feel Wiesenfeld truly cares for his job and realizes he has to prepare kids for adulthood and by giving in to the student, by passing them he is not doing his job.
Tough teaching is easily the best way to teach. Teachers are not always right and should own up when he or she makes and error, but when they are right they should never back down to the student. Even though Kurt Wiesenfeld may ruin the chance of winning the big game this year for the basketball team, in the long run the student will thank him for making them work for what they deserve.
