Introduction
As a student attending Workshop II, I was asked to write a report on the situation involving the government and the farmers in Argentina. The government had implemented a 44 % export tax on commodities such as soy and sun flower seeds, which caused the farmers union to launch a series of protests that are carried through by setting up roadblocks. This is claimed to be done for reasons of strategy, due to the fact that the negotiations with the government seem to have reached an impasse.
Owing to the controversy of this conflict and the troubles millions of inhabitants in this country have gone through, this report will focus on the effects caused by the successive strikes that have blocked the roads for over a hundred days.
Depleted grocery shelves
Since March 11, continuous roadblocks have been set up by the farmers causing depletion in groceries shelves, because of the cereal trucks blocking the paths of hundreds of vehicles carrying meat, milk and fuel, which has prevented customers from getting most products at the groceries. Consequently, this situation has brought even more disagreements to fire up the conflicts. However, many people still show their support by taking the streets of the main cities in Argentina and banging pots and pans -even in spite of the visible meagerly stocked supermarket shelves and lack of fuel all around the country.
Traffic jams
Regardless of the fact that the roadblocks are sometimes temporarily lifted -especially when talks with the government are held-, the agricultural strike goes on placing vehicles at key transit points around the country to prevent trucks from getting to the cities and ports. As a result, traffic jams still occur, causing inconveniences to many commuters, tourists, travelers and workers of non-agricultural activities, who complain about the disagreements between the government and the farmers and demand a prompt solution.
Opposing and confusing...
