One on the bases of life is oxygen we need it to live yet oxygen also makes a reactive species called free radicals they contribute to ageing and disease. Free radicals are open cell atoms molecules and ions they are unpaired. These are usually very reactive and are likely to take part in chemical reactions. These are damaging and are known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and contain or make radicals species.
Some free radicals happen naturally in the body they can be important key for biological functions such as sending communication through the body that switch on-off and also destroy infectious diseases. How ever when the body loses control of these species they can cause a wide degree of cellar damage because of their high reactivity.
What Technology is used?
The technology used is a dye that the cells absorb by the cells. Then a laser is used with a special wave length of light. The dye reacts with the wave length when it is around these concentrated free radicals. These produce better images than the original method which was confocal microscopy and flow Cytometry. Flow cytometry is a technique for counting, examining, and sorting microscopic particles suspended in a stream of fluid. Both of these relyed on the florescence of probe molecules.
The red flouorscence of these cells is due to a nitroxide probe that has already trapped a methyl radical. The blue florescence is due to a probe that specifically lights up the nucleus of the cell.
An Example of this technology?
An Example of this technology has been shown in medical research that has saved people lives. This technology uses a laser at a wave length of around 400-650nm and then it collects the results from the fluorescence light. While this happening a pinhole camera is watching make clear images from a out of focus light that are better than the old microscopy techniques.
This technology has help our...
