Philosophical Literature Essay II My thoughts of Materialism, Idealism and Pragmatism “It is not materialism that is the chief curse of the world, as pastors teach, but idealism. Men get into trouble by taking their visions and hallucinations too seriously.” -H. L. Mencken Materialism, the view that matter is the ultimate constituent of reality, is as old as philosophy itself. Materialism as a philosophy is held by those who maintain that existence is explainable solely in material terms, with no accounting of spirit or consciousness. Individuals who hold to this belief see the universe as a huge device held together by pieces of matter functioning in subjection to naturalistic laws. Since materialism denies all concepts of “god” Creation, it relies on the Theory of Evolution to explain itself, making beliefs in materialism and evolution interdependent. Materialism, involves the focus on material "things" as opposed to that which is spiritual nature. We live in a world surrounded by and composed of matter. It is natural, therefore, that we may become distracted from spiritual pursuits by material possessions, but this is frequently where problems occur. We can become obsessed by a desire to obtain them, or simply frustrated by the need to maintain them. My view of Materialism is I think the key problem with materialism, even when thought of today, is simply that it always must proceed on the basis of a 'that'. It always proceeds on the basis of some -- thing, force, entity, or substance, which exists in relation to an observer. Some materialists view matter in such terms, certainly. By definition, then, it never includes awareness of the act of observation. If it wishes to understand the act of observation, it can only do so by objectifying it, by looking at it again as an object or set of relations between things and forces. I have come to believe that
