In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the author presents her thoughts and impressions of society. Shelley portrays the defects of society, arguing that society sees only physical appearance rather than adhering to what is truly important in a human being’s character. Shelley supports the following argument by revealing the creature whose form is extremely monstrous and unfamiliar to society, but who he is also just as human as Victor and Elizabeth. Shelley conveys the importance of appearance in society; The effect of monstrosity thus plays a major part in Frankenstein. Shelley presents a situation where society is ignorant about the unfamiliar, different, and is also unwilling to accept and embrace the unusual. Shelley portrays the rejection of the creature by his creator, the society¬’s reaction to the wretch, and the way in which they cannot see beyond superficial. Shelley shows that by having knowledge, Walton is able to see beyond the physical appearance and ultimately better accept the monster for what he really is.
        The relationship between Victor Frankenstein and the creature in a society, should be that of a father and son. Although straight after seeing his creation, Frankenstein, decides he wants nothing to do with his “monster” or “wretch”(p.56) as he refers to him. Victor judged his own creation just after he got one short glance at him. He immediately exiles his creation, sending it to the world without his guidance. The first image unveiled   to Victor’s eyes of his creation was: “his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks. He might have spoken, but I did not hear; one hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain m, but I escaped, and rushed downstairs.” (p.56). Victor eludes his responsibility as a father, not thinking of the fact that his own creation might be acting as a baby that, for the first time, coming into contact with the world....
