100 Years of Movies

In the beginning of the film industry, one man dominated the industry. Although his films were short and primitive, this man was Anges Demille. The first great filmmaker who changed the industry was D. W. Griffith. Griffith introduced film into the motion picture theatre. He made four hundred short films in his career; he made a few four reel films, while his originals were only one reel each, which led to him being fired from his company. Griffith’s most famous movie was Birth of a Nation, which faced racial issues and was new to that time.

One of the first actresses that stood out in the early times was Mary Pickford, who made over one hundred movies before she was 20 years old. She married a man named Douglas Fairbank, together they opened up their own movie company. Into their company they brought one of perhaps the most famous actors of all time, Charlie Chaplin. Charlie Chapin and Fatty Arnold were the first to induct sights and stunts into their films, these stunts were previously unseen in films.

In the 1920’s, religion and spectacular palaces played a large part in movies. A large influence in many of the films came from foreign films, largely including German films. Sound was first brought in movies in 1926. Jack Warner was at the forefront of these movies, talking jokes were also introduced at this time. Around this time tickets were charged at about 20c each. Many of the actors of this time worked the movie company itself, including the great Humphrey Bogart.

Some of the greatest films of all time were released in 1939, these include; The Wizard of Oz, and Gone with the Wind. These also introduced one of the best screen actresses ever, Judie Garland. Garland grew up and spent just about all her time on the studio. She would work all day and night on her movies, which also led to her many problems, including depression and drugs.
