Abstract
Current research indicates that prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in this country. Only skin cancer is more common. Out of every three men who are diagnosed with cancer each year, one is diagnosed with prostate cancer. This paper is to encourage young male adults to seek preventative treatments. Upon reading of this paper young male adults will learn about possible causes, screening, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of prostate cancer.
A Walnut Sized Killer
I can remember the days my father would take me fishing. We sat on the bank while he would tell jokes that would scare the fish away. I can still remember the time my father was teaching me how to drive. I think he was more afraid than I was. I remember when my father would play catch with me in preparation for me to play baseball at the local recreation center. I can remember the voice of my father, being the strong man that he was keeping me on the right path even after I became a father myself. One of the things I can remember the most was the day my mother called me and said that my dad had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I really didn’t know much about this type of cancer, so I begin to research the severity of this disease. My father died within eight months of my receiving that call. The cancer was not detected early enough for him to have received treatment that could have saved his life. No one knows what causes prostate cancer. Doctors often cannot explain why one man develops prostate cancer and another does not. In researching this paper, I have found that early detection and prevention of this disease could reduce an enormous amount of men from dying. Preventative measure should be taken as early as age fifty or sooner depending on your family history. Visiting your doctor annually to get a digital rectal exam or a blood test is part of early prevention. These tests can detect early signs...
