More often than not, our society, which is life-affirming, beauty affirming, and pleasure affirming, systematically avoids the topic of death. In our society, we have very little contact with death. We are rarely brought face to face with death; we are not encouraged to contemplate death, or to come to come to terms with it. What we are encouraged to do is to avoid it at all costs and live as if we are never going to die. When someone close to us dies, we call the funeral director and have them take the body, dress it seal it all up for us. We have a funeral read a eulogy and go to work the next day, trying leaving the idea of death at the funeral and forgetting about it as fast as possible. We are a fast paced society, and our dealings with death are just as fast in the hopes of not thinking about our own impending death. This avoidance of death usually means that we will always we afraid of death and as a result the dying can not be treated with the right care. The dying person’s reality is not the reality we want to live in even though we too will all some day die. Death, however, is very much a part of life, just as birth is a part of life. In fact, the moment of birth implies death, no one can escape it. None-the-less, our society will turn a blind eye to this inevitable fate any day of the week if given the chance. As a result, palliative care is not given the attention is deserves. Thousands of people die each day, just as thousands are born everyday. And although pregnancy care is a main stay of all hospitals, “death care” is rarely addressed. The contemplation of death and coming to terms with the fact that we will all die someday can really help benefit us as a society and not in just the health care that can be provided for the dying. As long as our society fears death, life can not be lived at its best and fullest potential.
