In 2004, there were 441 marriages in BC, Canada where at least one of the two parties was under 20 years of age. With the world now being less conservative, less people blink an eye towards same sex marriages, and, though it does not receive as much coverage by the media, teenage marriages. The latter topic is debatable. Some people strongly agree that teenagers are mature enough to make their own decisions (albeit that they need parental and court consent if they would like to marry while they are under the age of 18 or 19), while others debate that they are not mature enough and shouldn’t be thinking of marriage and consummation until they are well over the age of 20 years old, if not older. Being a teenager myself, though not thinking of marriage quite yet, I believe teenagers do not realise the struggles that go into a marriages, therefore shouldn’t get married before the age of 20. It is a fact that teens who marry will have to deal with financial responsibilities, major commitment issues (such as not knowing the difference of love and infatuation) and parental responsibilities.
Teens are usually not prepared for marriage, both mentally and physically. There are only handfuls that are. Marriage comes with many responsibilities, most of which teens are not prepared to handle. One of the many issues they’ll have to deal with is the question of financial stability. Realistically, the financial problems they are going to face are; paying bills, buying groceries and paying off insurance. It is unfortunate but true when it is said that what sounds like a lot of money to teenagers now, will be very little when monthly bills must be met. Most of the time teens do not think of these situations because their parents take care of these issues for them and teens aren't used to taking care of these things by themselves.
