Dead Poets Society:
Endows Life Unto The Lifeless
Dead Poets Society
Director: Peter Weir
Cast: Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke
Running Time: 128 minutes
Classification: 13
Rating: 8/10
Genre: Drama
Dead Poets Society is a film about an English Professor, John Keating, and his students. It is set in a 1950’s prestigious prep school, Welton Academy. The morals and ethics in which the school is based on are Tradition, Honour, Discipline and Excellence. Much to the dismay of the higher authorities of the school, Keating teaches his students new ideals of non- conformity, confidence, perseverance of one’s dream as well as a love for poetry. This motivation for poetry fuels a few students to begin a poets club called “Dead Poets Society”.
The acting by Robin Williams (John Keating), Robert Leonard (Neil Perry) and Ethan Hawke (Todd Anderson) is exceptional. The audience is left awe struck by Robin Williams, empathises with Robert Leonard and is brought to tears by Ethan Hawke. The story itself - which tells of tradition and conformity opposed to the want to be extraordinary and the need for individuality- is brilliant. Although it was produced in 1989 the film is a timeless production as it deals with aspects and problems that are encountered in our every day lives. The quotes, which are included in the script, are exceptional and the dialogue is absolutely amazing, fluent and eloquent. The music played during the movie was appropriate and served its purpose of creating and setting the audiences reaction to the scene. The setting, scenery and costumes were perfect in every aspect. All the above elements contributed to the intensity and meritorious quality of the film. The movie leaves one with a feeling of motivation, passion and a drive to be brilliant.
