Although humans are all very different, all individuals over the age of 20 have gone through the adolescent stage before moving on to adulthood. This stage has different factors and with them several changes that can occur at the same time. These factors interact and influence adolescents on every level such as physical, social, cognitive, moral and personality wise. Several theories have been developed and applied, so that a further and better understanding of the developmental stage of adolescence can be reached.
Physical development in adolescence begins in the early teenage years. These physical changes are sometimes dramatic and or traumatic for some children. Adolescent girls will experience changes in height weight, breast development and the menstrual cycle will commence. Boys will experience changes in height and weight, but they will also experience a deepening voice and facial hair. This stage is called puberty and is considered an important milestones for every adolescent, thus marking the beginning of the end of their childhood. Many things shape our personalities and character. Everyone has a specific nature which takes particular form due to two major factors. The first factor is hereditary from ones parents and is called nature. The second is environmental. These factors include but are not limited to things one sees and hears from the time he or she is born and all interactions had with other people as one grows and matures. This factor is called nurture. Genetics and environment play an important role in physical development. For example, if the father of a child is extremely hairy, then most likely his male offspring will start getting facial hair very early in his adolescent years. However, this could also mean that his female offspring could also be hairier than what is considered normal for a girl. This is an example of how changes during puberty can become traumatic.
