In many colleges across the country there are first generation college students. First-generation college students are individuals whose parents' educational level is no higher than a high school diploma or less. Students whose parents did not attend college are more likely than their non first-generation counterparts to be less academically prepared for college, to have less knowledge of how to apply for college and for financial assistance, and to have more difficulty adjusting to the college atmosphere once they enroll. They tend to start at two-year institutions for various reasons, three of which are (a) that their academic preparation is not competitive enough to gain admission in a college institution, (b) they cannot afford the tuition costs at a college institution, or (c) they need the flexibility of class schedules at a two-year institution to meet their other responsibilities as workers, spouses, or parents.
In general many adults with a higher educational background in their family are expecting their children to go to college. In contrast, when it comes to first-generation students their family is not expecting them to go to college, but it is an option. Most first-generation students are expected to get full time jobs, learn a trade, or join the military. Some of the only encouragement first-generation students get is usually from their educational facilities. Because of the lack of information and options about college it affects their placement in college.
Not only does a first-generation student’s education background and general information about colleges affect a student. At times first-generations students are in there late adulthoods and have to support a family. The cost and whether or not they can afford to go to college can change the outcome.
