In today’s business environment the four functions of management must work in harmony for business to have a better chance of succeeding. Today, business is quickly changing, just look at technology and how technology is helping businesses grow and be a great deal more efficient. A vital part in allowing the four functions of management to work is through delegation. This paper will look at the benefits and skills of delegation within the four functions of management and how they relate to my tenure as CEO of a large cardiovascular practice.
Effective delegation at any level of the organization and within the four functions of management requires a necessary skill set. The necessary skill set is: have a clear understanding of what you want accomplished, give the person you are delegating to the appropriate time, resources and authority to complete what was delegated to them, always communicate with the person you delegated to review the status and check for any issues that may come up, and take corrective action if the project is not being performed as agreed upon.
Planning is “specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals” (Bateman and Snell, 2007). Within my previous organization, examples of the benefits of delegation were numerous. One of the examples was related to the planning of changes to reimbursement. The Board delegated to me the task of creating a plan to maximize our reimbursement revenue based on projected changes to Medicare’s reimbursement. The benefit of the Board delegating to the CEO was that they could concentrate their efforts on their strengths, which were practicing medicine and in turn generating revenue for the practice. The other benefit was I could use my strengths related to strategic planning and reimbursement to create a plan that was acceptable to the Board.
