WAR IN THE BALKANS!

The war of Yugoslavia formed from the years 1991 up until 1999. There were many little wars between many different countries but all involved Serbia; some of the other countries are Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Kosovo/Albania. All of these countries were apart of the Balkan region and Yugoslavia. It all started when Slovenia and Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Albania/Kosovo followed suit later on.

THE TEN DAY WAR
Shortly after Slovenia declared independence they removed the signs ‘Yugoslavia’ from the border posts and replaced them with signs saying Slovenia. After the posts were set up, Serbian tanks showed up on there door steps taking down the posts. Before the declaration of independence the Slovenian Defence Minister Janez Jansa, had bought enough soldiers to take on the Serbian Army. After ten days of fighting the war came to an end when a truce was negotiated by the European Community. In January 1992 Slovenia was considered as an independent state and in May 1992 they became part of the UN.

WAR IN CROATIA
Croatia declared independence on 25 June 1991 from Yugoslavia, the country then entered civil war. Many Serbs lived in Croatia and thought that president Franjo Tudjman intended to wipe them out. Both the Serbs and Croats formed military groups made up of armed extremists, the Croatian Serbs set up Chetnik which was named after WWII fighters. The Croats formed Ustasha; they modelled themselves on the Ustasha of the 1940’s. The Chetnik’s carried a black flag that had a white skull and crossbones with the words ‘Freedom or Death’. The Ustasha were wearing black uniforms and used the Nazi salute.

The city of Dubrovnik which is on the Adriatic Sea was heavily bombarded on the 1st of October 1991 by the Yugoslav Federal Army (JNA). Dubrovnik had about 50,000 Croats living there and only around 6,000 Serbs but it was attacked so that Serbia...
