The horror and heroism of the First World War have provided somber and inspiring themes for a whole generation of English poets. The green fields of France and the poppy-covered meadows of Belgium were transformed into soggy, muddy trenches that became graveyards for millions of young men ‘for these who die as cattle’. Were they fearless heroes in pursuit of noble ideal or just ignorant victims of a senseless geopolitical power fight back?

War poets use different ways and approaches to supply their readers with myriad impressions of war. With reference to four war poets, Rupert Brooke, Jessie Pope, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, we will look in depth the characteristics of poems during the First World War and their contributions to the literary world. These war poets used their poems to evoke the people surrounding when war broke out. Some of these poems are somewhat very in favor of war, which encourage young men to join war as a manner of showing love to their country. Others in contrast are not in support of war (anti-war), perfect and clear illustrations of the physical hardship and emotional pain that the soldiers have to endure in war are projected through these poems.
