In search for the American dream, people from all over the world come to American hoping for a better life. Whether this dream is wealth, success or just plain happiness, Immigrants flee to this country in hope of finding something better then the life they have left behind. Some immigrants might have been doctors or lawyers in their own countries but when they come to the United States, they end up starting life all over and most end up never pursuing their former careers. Finding them selves in a lesser status then what they used to be in their own countries, Immigrants end up always struggling to prove them selves in a foreign land. The play “the Cuban Swimmer” portrays a unique allegory of the immigrant experience in America. It gives the reader an insight of how a family unit made of different generation deals with the challenges facing them.
Eduardo and his wife Aida had fled Cuba in search of finding a better life in America. Together they had two kids Simon and Margarita. Like most immigrant families, the Suarez family is a very close knit family consisting of many generations all living together. Margarita’s grandmother Abuela is not only a member of their family, but she also joins them on the boat in support of margarita as she swims the marathon to Catalina.
Through out the play we come to discover that the relationship between the father Eduardo and his daughter Margarita is the one that stands out the most. Eduardo is Margarita’s coach and mentor. Through out the play it is he who pushes Margarita to give it her all and to never give up on the race. Like most parents Eduardo wants to see his daughter to become better then he is and to succeed in this race and in life. However; the fact that Eduardo is not a swimmer himself raises the question whether swimming and participating in this race is his daughters dream or a dream of his own.
