David Hockney’s portrait “Husband and Wife” is a painting that brings out the simplicity of on the old couples normal life, in which the simplest of rooms caters for the two. In such a small space the two can be in perfectly harmony with nothing bother them. The painting can also show a slight insight into each there personalities. We also fine that this couple find things the simpler the better as seen with the hole room.

The painting as a hole is very bright with lots of light filling it. Although at its outskirts it seems to get slightly darker. It seems to be set in a little sitting room which is most likely looking out onto a window were the rooms main light source comes from. The paintings centre peace is a little set of draws with the husband enthralled by the large book he is browsing through. The wife is look directly straight, not at the paint almost right by him into her front yard and street just observing and thinking. It seems to be the way the to get through there days and the way they are most comfortable in each other company yet in there own worlds.

The artist focus on keeping all objects as close to one colour as possible. This is an effort to try and keep the paintings simplicity, it is also a good technique in draw the eyes to each object as an individual. This also works on bringing them all out as much stronger figures with sharp edges showing they are apart of the room but also one in there own.

The husband and wife are painted without a clear meaning or view, like we are an onlookers with a sneak view into there world. This is a great way for the artist to show what he believes is there true characteristics. We can see that the wife have a extremely soft face with no sharp lines indicating she is a soft and caring women.
