Ballet National D' Cuba
While touring DC a few years ago I happened upon a showing of Ballet National D’ Cuba at the Kennedy Center. To my surprise my husband had already purchased tickets to the event. By 2:00 p.m. we had found our seats and were eager for the presentation to begin. We were seated centered at the bottom floor of a gigantic room with a high rise behind us. The lights dimmed, the thick maroon curtain rose, and spot light lit Cuban scenery as an impressive orchestra began to play. Six performers wearing old-fashioned lavender Cuban costumes began to dance around the principal who wore a romantic tutu with soft pink-toed ballet shoes. The gorgeous principal enchanted the audience with her fluttering movements, and sharp precise Pilates. Three male figures in tights with Cuban looking vests paraded their companions about the stage as they supported them with their angular movements. All the while our lovely principal poetically expressed her emotions through figureless linear movements combined with grace and poise. Before the mighty orchestra sounded its final note, the players concluded their dance and froze the statues in all sorts of vertical postures. Much to my surprise when the lights came on, as the scene ended, my husband was still awake, and he even seemed to enjoy the performance.
Not long after my husband finished expressing his feelings about the performance the curtain began to rise. The stage was designed to look like a small Cuban town with focus on a single tower, which displayed a beautiful women looking out one of its windows. An admiring young suitor stood in the middle of the street partaking in her beauty. As the handsome young man gazed upon her loveliness, a beautiful woman approached his side noticing that he was noticing someone other than herself, she enraged with jealousy unleashed her fury by stomping on his foot. The hurt woman stormed off the stage as the prince-like gentleman wearing a red...
