Individual Behavior and Communication

Determining an individual’s behavior in the market place has not always been so easy. In resent years psychology has made leaps and bounds helping organizations work through issues that impact individual’s behaviors toward diversity, ethical & leadership responsibilities and good communication.
For a number of years, employers have looked to behavioral scientists for new and innovative ideas to make their organizations more efficient and effective. Organizations have looked for help in the areas of productivity and efficiency. Organizational behavior and individual psychology have played a major role in the development of time studies, motion studies, efficiency studies, job design, employee testing, incentive pay programs, and the list goes on. Behavioral scientists have also played a major role in the development and promotion of modern organizational leadership styles, all of which have had a significant influence on individual behavior (Clark 2008).
According to Real World Solutions, a behavioral coaching and change organization, individual behavior is defined as; “A person's actions which are controlled by the sum of their thinking, beliefs and feelings about specific ideas, situations, or other people” (Zeus and Skiffington 2008). Nationally organizations spend millions of dollars each year on training, coaching, and educational programs in an attempt to change individual employee’s behavior. The basic assumption of course is that education and training will bring about behavioral change in the individual. This is referred to as the “mentalistic model” of human behavior. When education and training do not seem to provide sufficient behavioral change within the individual organizations will rely on punishment which my only instill anger in the individual opening the door to resentment and possible retaliation.
