While reading chapter 13, I thought there should be a new TV show. Law & Order: Juvenile Squad (ching, ching). And really it’s this first question that made me think most about it. How would the TV characters be portrayed? As a foster parent I’ve dealt with many people in the juvenile system. One person sticks out in my mind the most as being someone who really should change their career.
This probation officer made an assumption that if a child was at the point of having a PO then there is only one problem and only one way to treat and deal with them. My ordeal with this PO, besides being the fuel for me to take this class, made me realize that there are people working with kids and they have little to no understanding of youth and no compassion.
I think a college education could be beneficial but not necessarily mandatory. What seems to be high on the list of importance is the desire to work with kids. When you’re dealing with someone’s life as your job, you should not have that job because one day you came across an opening in that department. Some people go to school and get their piece of paper after four years and their major was Art History. You could use that in a program for delinquents but I don’t think that’s going to help much as a juvenile police officer.
Perhaps a better idea would be a special training program offered at colleges or specialized schools. Places like DeVry, Katherine Gibbs or The Stuart School where they offer programs for specific career paths such as a medical or legal secretary, accounting assistant or computer technician.
I think in a special program there should be a wide range of classes; a lot of classes that would be introductions to specific subjects. I love thinking about how all my classes taken so far are related, they all feed off each other and seem so important together. Certainly that’s just me; my Spanish class has sparked an interest to take a history class. But...
