Sigmund Freud was born May 6, 1856 in Freiburg, Moravia, now in the Czech Republic. When Freud turned 4, his family moved to Vienna, the capital of Austria. In 1881, Freud graduated from the University of Vienna. He specialized in neurology, the study and treatment of diseases in the nervous system. In 1886, Freud went to Paris to work under Jean Martin Charcot, a famous neurologist. Charcot worked with hysteria patients. He found that he could stop the symptoms by using hypnosis.

In 1886, the same year Freud married Martha Bernays, he went back to Vienna to work with hysteria patients. Although many people disagreed with Freud’s theories when he presented them in the 1890s, he gained international recognition in 1910. In 1891, he and his family moves to Berggasse. In 1896, he first used psychoanalysis as a type of therapy. His studies showed if a hysterical patient talked openly about their symptoms and fantasies, the symptoms would begin to slow down and would eventually stop altogether if the patient could remember what first caused them.
In 1905, Freud published his work Three Essays on the Theory of the Sexuality. This work involved his theory on infantile sexuality. This theory stated that bad childhood experiences could have negative effects on the adult in the future. This theory included stages. The first was the ‘oral’ stage. The next was the ‘anal’ stage. The last stage is the ‘phallic’ stage.

In 1913, Freud and his partner, Carl G. Jung, go their separate ways. Unfortunately, in 1922, Freud was diagnosed with gum cancer. In 1923, he underwent a surgery to remove his part of his gums and jaw. This seemed to make everything worst. This is also the year Freud published his work The Ego and the Id.

In The Ego and the Id, Freud describes the three structural elements of the mind, the id, ego, and super-ego. The id is the part of the mind that controls the instincts for satisfaction. For example, a...
