Becoming A Bandee

“What is your rationale for applying for the above mentioned position?” It’s funny, I’ve been asked that question so many times before, but I never know how to answer. I could always talk about how great of a musician and person I am, and how I have a 3.8 GPA, how I’m in National Honor Society, how I took AP music theory, and how I have been in various honor choruses throughout past three years… but that’s so typical of an essay like this. I could also tell you a story of how my grandfather sang to me every night before I went to bed when I was younger, and how he recently died from lung cancer, and that is the reason why I continue to play music, and how proud he would be of me if I became section leader. But I don’t want to guilt you into that either. So let me just tell you about my experience with band.
For years, I looked at the Marching Band as a weird, obsessive colt full of music nerds and annoying kids who talked about band all day. They wore those ugly, bright yellow sweatshirts all year round until the end of the year, when they got brand new ones that looked exactly the same, sans the ketchup stains. Never in an million years did I think of even talking to one of those people, let alone be one of them. It wasn’t until sophomore year that I wanted to get back into piano, and I even considered walking to the band room without being forced. So one Thursday night, I went to percussion practice. That was the last time I remember being “normal”. I don’t know how to say this without being trite and banal but, that practice changed my life. The people were so accepting, so funny, and so close. It was this huge, dysfunctional family that I never ever got a chance to know. So there I was someone who thought they were “cool” by not being bandee, jealous of the huge dysfunctional family called the PTHS marching band. It was then, that I became a bandee.
