Today, the status of America’s economy is a controversial concern. In reality, some people stalwartly believe our economy is not as dreadful as others believe, whereas some argue that our economy is slumping because of high inflation, mounting unemployment, and slumping gross national product. Specifically, the article, “Why We’re Gloomier Than The Economy”, written by Neil Irwin agrees with optimistic economists who believe our economy is on track; on the contrary, Debra Saunders in her article, “The Bad News Economy”, represents realists who upset with our economy’s fruitless position. By examining those two editorials impartially, we could discover Irwin has successfully convinced readers by using a lot of factual information such as stats and testimony while Saunders has persuaded her audience ineffectively.
In the first article, “Why We’re Gloomier Than The Economy”, Neil Irwin strongly argues that the economy is not as appalling as other estimates as he explains: “This has left economists trying to figure out why Americans’ perceptions are so much more negative than the data analysts use to measure how things are going”. Indeed, this explanation should be detailed in order for readers to know what Irwin means about “negative”
The first supporting point of Irwin which proves our economy is productive is the unconstructive affects of high price of gasoline and food. His strategy is to remind readers that their judgment about the economy could be biased if they let the changes of those necessities’ prices influence their mind. From this, he presents an example in order to convince readers agree with his view; that example, nonetheless, is definitely efficient because he was able to answer the primary concern: when people’s expenditure for those commodities increases every day, they could be biased in their judgment about the whole picture of the economy. As a consequence of appeal his audience’s emotions, Irwin has convinced those effectively.
