Germany
The country’s full name is Federal Republic of Germany. Germany is located in the central Europe. The Capital and the largest city is Berlin. Ethnic groups are Primarily German, Danish minority in the north, Sorbian (Slavic) minority in the east and 7.3 million foreign residents. The largest religion in Germany is Protestants, (26 million), followed by Roman Catholics, (26 million), and approximately 3.2 million Muslims. With a population of 82 million Germany has the second largest population in the European Union. Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states. The official language is of course,German.
Major political parties are Social Democratic Party, Christian Democratic Union, Christian Social Union, Alliance 90/Greens, Free Democratic Party and Left Party. In January 1999, the European Monetary Union introduced the Democratic Republic (GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany.
European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949. After the War German was divided in two part parts of Berlin as "West Berlin" and "East Berlin". Both halfs were divided by the “Birlin wall”. This was an actual wall that stretched over 96 miles seperating the two halfs. The wall also included an anti-vehicle trench and over 300 watch towers. This is what held Germany back from the first brick of assembely in August of 1961. The subsiquential demolition of the wall took place in November of 1989. This marked the start of Germanys rise to greatness.
