The country’s socio-economic stability, security, peace and order are at threat with the presence of different organized gangs in the country. The activities of these big and established gangs reported by media and documented by authorities are widespread across cities and towns and the effects of the damages they cause to lives and properties are immeasurable.
The worsening problem about the proliferation and growth of gangs in the country is the foremost concern of government authorities particularly in the national security and police sectors. Likewise, the illegal activities of some heavily organized gangs such as drugs trade, kidnapping, protection rackets, human trafficking and all types of smuggling which occur in the country and with gangs in coordination with some countries around the world now become the international concerns of all nations. How to put an end to this societal problem is a global challenge posed to every nation.
AMERICA’S ORGANIZED GANGS AND THEIR GLOBALIZATION
Statistics presented by National Youth Gang Center (NYGC) reveal that around 21,500 gangs with more than 731,500 members are operating in 3,300 cities across the United States (Papachristos 2005). The proliferation of gangs in the country seems unstoppable. As a matter of fact, these gangs are seen to have expanded their operations around the world. Members are increasing in number side by side the damage incurred from their illegal activities.
What causes the rapid widespread or globalization of these gangs? Jodi Vittori in her study reveals several factors regarding this concern (Abstract). Vittori claims that the US policy of deporting immigrants convicted of crimes back to their countries and are active members of organized gangs is giving more opportunities for them to introduce their organizations and further recruit additional members.
