Summary/Analyze Essay
“Perfectionism may be the ultimate self-defeating behavior. It turns people into slaves of success – but keeps them focused on failure, dooming them to a lifetime of doubt and depression. It also winds up undermining achievement in the modern world.” I chose this article because I am extremely fascinated in human behavior.
Perfectionism is a behavior that increases seriousness. It takes away from your ability to focus on the big picture of learning what it is you are supposed to be doing because you are so focused on how exactly it is supposed to be done. Those who seek perfection often find that the goal they seek cannot be attained, a realization that can result in feelings of intense frustration and depression. In this way, the pursuit of perfection can become quite counterproductive. The inability to produce something perfect can cause some perfectionists not to complete a task at all. At the same time, they tend to avoid situations that they cannot succeed in perfectly which leads them to abandon whatever it is that they are doing all together.

This article gives me a more rounded analysis of perfectionism. It helps me to see exactly what areas this behavior affects as well as how to correct it. I personally have issues with perfectionism so this article I was able to relate to a lot. Growing up as a child I was always told I needed to fix this, and redo that; no matter how hard I tried it was almost impossible to please my parents. In turn, it made me have serious confidence problems, and made me not even want to start tasks because I figured I wouldn’t do it well enough.
