Organizational Culture: Charming Shoppes Inc.

Charming Shoppes Inc. is multi-channel specialty apparel retailer mainly focusing on plus-size women’s apparel. Their subsidiary includes Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Catherines, and Petite Sophisticate. The company employs over 30,000 associates around the country in their retail, corporate locations and brand headquarters. This organization is both ethical and customer-responsive.
The most appealing thing to me about this company’s organizational culture is their overall vision and mission in the fashion industry. They want to be known for celebrating the lives and fashion image of women who wear plus sizes. Myself, not being a size zero, have an understanding to this need in the fashion industry. The company has a continuing mission to serve the lifestyle apparel needs of women wearing plus sizes with the very best service, fashion selections, value and fit. They also recognize that in order to serve their customers properly they must show commitment not just through their products but also through their actions.
Charming Shoppes and its retail divisions all have common values that I agree upon: exceed the customer’s expectations, act with integrity, be innovative, collaborate through teamwork, deliver superior performance, and support the community. (Charming, n.d.) Out of these listed values I mostly share the idea of teamwork. I believe that an organization can achieve their goals when everyone works together as one unit.
Out of the seven primary characteristics of organizational culture, Charming Shoppes embodies team orientation, people orientation, and attention to detail. Charming Shoppes believes in creating a workplace that promotes trust, mutual respect, and teamwork. Team orientation is highly promoted in every retail store. (Charming, n.d.)
