Extremely competitive sports usch as football, basketball and base ball may involve aggressive tactics ut actual violence is considered to fall outside the boundaries of good sportsmanship. Many contact sports such as rugby, football and wrestling involve certain levels of physical violence but restrictions and pentalties for excessive and dangerous force is enforced. No wonder violence in sports was embraced in the past.
The Greeks believed that the athletic ideal incorporated corage and endurance with modesty, dignity and fair mindedness. And these values could not be sufficed without contact (violent) sports. Although there might be chaotic brawls, both by athletes and spectators, it is still not considered violence in sports as these are outside sporting grounds and it is under the mercy of the law, therefore, it is not considered violence in sports.
When in the stands and streets, fans may become violent to show their loyalty to a team to release frustration with a team’s performance. By right, this should not be also counted as violence in sports as the main focus is the athletes not the spectators. In fact, spectators and fans are just people who idolize their favourite athletes and they are not the main focus. As long as the athletes do not brawl among each other in the game, it is fine and this would never happen as most athletes must have a ceratin level of discipline and respect for his or her opponent and they would never resort to violence. As a sportsperson, it is basic for one to practice good sportsmanship to qualify to be an athlete.
Also, the idea of a sporting arena of being a platform for countries to settle their diputes in front the world’ media is said to be true. This is to prevent excessive sports violence from happening as the athletes will know that their reputation is at stake and the whole world is watching them and they must not cause any embarassment to themselves. If not they might lose their jobs.
