As a child, being different from others, Tubman understood the meaning of humanity and overcame every obstacle. She was a courageous woman who took every opportunity that she believed would help her achieve human rights. Her life as a slave, an abolitionist and conductor on the Underground Railroad, civil war soldier, nurse, spy and a social reformer, made her become a woman with tremendous courage, strong as a man and helped her successfully in achieving her goal which was freedom for all.
Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in 1820 on a plantation in Bucktown, Maryland. Many blacks were born into slavery during the 19th century. She was one of 11th children born into slavery. Her parents were both from the Ashanti tribe in West Africa. Harriet was a brave woman who had always thought of freedom and rights of humanity. By the time she was 5 years old, she was hired as a house servant, taking care of babies and at the same time doing the house work. Being able to work and maintaining her strength, she was later sent to work in the field work which was known as “out door work”. Even though she was only 12 years old, she felt the same as if she was in her twenty and always ready to work and have more experiences through her journey. Her time working in the fields probably contributed to her strength. At the age of 15, Harriet was injured and had not had any medical treatment. As a result of her injury, she suffered “sleeping fits” until she could no longer able to control her self and work as a strong woman. In 1844, she was married to a free black man named John Tubman while still being in slavery. Years later, Harriet found out that her owner died and that all the slaves where going to be sold to the south as a slave. She also found out that her husband was included by the people who came up with the idea of selling these salves to the south.
