The CPA model takes the idea of overaccommodation and extends it into a broader picture of the causes and consequences of bad intergenerational communication. The CPA model begins with an observation of age cues. The CPA model argues that these cues to age activate stereotypes of aging that influence people’s decisions about communication. Whether mild or extreme, this overaccommodative or patronizing style of communication constrains the older adult’s options in the conversation. The CPA model argues that overaccommodative speech and the resulting constrains on older people’s communication can have very negative effects for the older person. Age identity is the sense of shared group membership, and the similarities that come along with that, based on age group. The age disclosure is interesting for a couple of reasons. First, they reveal that age is actually a resource that can be used at any point in a conversation to protect or enhance face. The second interesting thing about these two uses of age (disjunctive and accounting) is that both rest on the same assumptions about the aging process. I think older people can do in conversation to younger people, because in my experience, when older people speak me, they don’t hide their mind that they talked me naturally. If we find ourself in an intergenerational relationship, making sure we have common goals is more important than ever. Ideas about marriage, having children, finances, retirement, etc. need to be compatible. The larger the age difference, the more difficult it may be to find common ground when it comes to key life goals. If the age difference is considerable, one person may be thinking about retiring when the other wants to start a family. By discussing our ideas of the future and each other's life goals, the two of you will have a better chance of working out our relationship.
