he Seven Churches
During Holy week there are many traditions that people practice around the world. One of the traditions that my family and I use to practice in Bolivia was going and visiting seven different Catholic churches. We would do this on the Thursday of the Holy week. This tradition is usually practiced by Catholic believers. Entire families go out during the night to visit seven different Catholic churches; and in each church people stop and pray. This tradition has been passed on from generation to generation.
Everything starts around six in the afternoon, when most of the people get out of work. My hometown (Cochabamba) was pretty small, so no cars were needed to visit the churches. Adding to that the streets in downtown are closed for vehicles. Also in downtown, also known as the “plaza principal”, there are many different churches that are close together. Thursday night is incredible. It is a lot of fun walking to different churches, seeing old friends, and family members; and spending a good time with them. In the streets there are different stages where the Last Supper is reenacted. The biggest reenactment of the Last Supper is held at the Cathedral, were at a certain time around ten pm the person that represents Christ is taken in as a prisoner and stays in a kind of jail cell until the next day when the procession and the Crucifixion is held.
As part of the traditions, there are many stands on the street serving different types of food. The awesome smell at the streets just makes people want to eat the most they can. The typical deep fried empanada is one of the typical foods of this tradition. Just by looking at the color of the empanada covered with sugar makes people try at least one. If by any case someone does not want to eat the empanadas, there are other choices to satisfy their hunger. For example there are big apples that are sold covered with caramel. You choose which apple you want and then the vendor puts it on...
